barque

barque

barque, or bark in the USA, a vessel with at least three masts all square rigged except for the mizzen which is fore-and-aft rigged. Until the mid-19th century barques were relatively small commercial sailing ships of up to about 500 tons. Later they were built up to about 3,000 GRT for the grain and nitrate trades. Finally four- and five-masted barques of over 5,000 GRT were built for this trade ranging up to the biggest sailing ship ever built, France II, of 5,806 gross register tonnage. Although obsolete as trading vessels, several of the larger barques are still in commission as sail training ships, and new barque-rigged vessels have been built for this purpose. Several decommissioned barques have also been preserved in many countries as museum ships.
