barony
barony, a territorial division of a county composed of a number of townlands. There are about 270 baronies in Ireland. The origins of both the term and the divisions are obscure, though the name was in use in the 16th century, while by the 19th baronies were reckoned to relate to former Gaelic lordships. As administrative units they served as bases for taxation, law enforcement, and general administration until the local government reforms of the mid‐19th century made them largely redundant. The 1891 census was the last to be taken on a barony basis.
