barcarolle
barcarolle, or barcarole, originally the name given to songs sung by Venetian boatmen, or barcaruoli, while rowing their gondolas. However, the meaning has been extended to cover any song reminiscent of the original Venetian barcarolle, which normally had a slow tempo and most often a sad or doleful air. The word dates back to the 17th century.
