bala
bala (Skt.; Pāli, power). Various lists of powers (bala) occur in the sources, but the most common is a group known as the ‘five powers’. Each of these eradicates its opposite negative tendency as follows: (1) faith (śraddhā) overcomes false beliefs; (2) energy (vīrya) overcomes laziness; (3) mindfulness (smṛti) overcomes forgetfulness; (4) concentration (samādhi) overcomes distractedness; (5) insight (prajñā) overcomes ignorance. The five powers are developed through augmenting the strength of the five spiritual faculties (indriya). These powers also form part of the 37 ‘factors of enlightenment’ (bodhi-pākṣika-dharma).
