aubergine
aubergine The fruit of Solanum melongena, a native of south east Asia, widely cultivated and eaten as a vegetable, also known as egg‐plant and (in west Africa) field egg. Half a medium‐sized aubergine (140 g) is a source of folate and vitamin C; provides 2.8 g of dietary fibre; supplies 20 kcal (85 kJ).

aubergine (eggplant) Tropical member of the potato (and nightshade) family. The fruit may be eaten as a vegetable. A bushy perennial with violet flowers native to the New World, it is now widely cultivated in temperate regions. Family Solanaceae; species Solanum melongena.
