āstika
āstika (Skt.).
1. In Hinduism, one who is orthodox in belief, accepting the ultimate authority of the vedas. 2. For earlier Buddhists (and Jains), an atthika (Pāli), is one who accepts the doctrine of karma and the result of deeds. In Mahāyāna Buddhism, it refers to one who asserts the real eternal existence of phenomena. |
