aspect ratio
aspect ratio usually refers to the ratio between the length of the luff and foot of a yacht's mainsail, but in some modern yachts may also refer to the ratio of the depth of a yacht's keel fin to its length. In the early days of Bermudan mainsails the aspect ratio used to be as low as 2 : 1, but in modern racing yachts the luff-to-foot length ratio is generally between 3.5 : 1 and 4 : 1. Such a high aspect ratio means a tall and narrow sail which is like a glider's wing set up on end. It is highly efficient in sailing very close to the wind (as near as 3½ points or about 39°) when set with suitable headsails.
