application layer
application layer A layer in the OSI REFERENCE MODEL. It is the layer in which applications such as SERVERS and NEWSREADERS reside. These applications produce and consume data which is sent to and received from lower layers. In CLIENT SERVER COMPUTING systems this is the layer where a client resides. There is also a layer known as the application layer in the TCP-IP architecture; this combines the functions of the APPLICATION LAYER, the PRESENTATION LAYER, and the SESSION LAYER in the OSI model.
