anumāṇa
anumāṇa (Skt.). Inference. In Buddhist logic (pramāṇa), a term used for the process of inference and proof by means of reasoning and syllogistic logic. Two aspects are distinguished: (1) inference for one's own benefit (svārtha-anumāṇa), which refers to private internal processes of valid reasoning; (2) inference for another's benefit (parārtha-anumāṇa), or the formal process of public proof of a thesis using standard syllogistic logic.
