adrenergic (ad-rĕ-ner-jik) adj. describing or relating to nerve fibres that release noradrenaline as a neurotransmitter. a. receptor (adrenoceptor) any of the receptors that are stimulated by noradrenaline and/or adrenaline, of which there are two types, alpha (α) and beta (β), each with subtypes (α₁, α₂, β₁, and β₂). 1. Describing a cell, especially a neuron, or a cell receptor that is stimulated by adrenaline, noradrenaline, or related substances. See also adrenoceptor.

2. Describing a nerve fibre or neuron that releases adrenaline or noradrenaline when stimulated. Compare cholinergic.
