Zhenjiang

Zhenjiang, Jiangsu/China Guyang, Dantu, Jingkou, Run Zhou A very ancient site, it became a military garrison in 581 on the Yangtze River; a military unit called Zhenhai was established here in 782. It got this name because the Zhen River is linked to the hăi ‘sea’ here. It became the seat of a military governor during the Song dynasty (960–1126) and the unit changed its name to Zhenjiang in 975. The name may be derived from the abbreviation of a phrase meaning ‘guarding the town defending the river’. The character zhèn can mean ‘town’, but also ‘to subdue’ or ‘to suppress’ and, in reference to the jiāng ‘river’, ‘calm’ or ‘tranquil’.
