Zachariah

Zachariah. The father of St John the Baptist (Lk.1 and 3:2). A Jewish priest, he is said to have received a vision in the Temple promising him a son who would be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’; he celebrated the birth of the child in the Benedictus. Feast day, 5 Nov.

Zachariah [Heb.,= Zechariah ], in the Bible, king of Israel, son and successor of Jeroboam II. After ruling six months he was murdered by Shallum, who seized the throne.
