Yüan-wu Kʾo-chʾin
Yüan-wu Kʾo-chʾin (Jap., Engo Kokugon; 1063–1135). Master of the Yōgi lineage of Rinzai, dharma-successor of Wu-tsu Fa-yen, and major figure in the development of kōan based Zen. He was head of different monasteries, and was favoured by the northern emperor, Hui-tsung, who called him Fo-kuo Chʾan-shih, ‘Zen master of the buddha fruit’. His major work was the joint-compilation of Hekiganroku, the Blue Cliff Record—see KŌAN.

Yüan-wu K'o-ch'in
Yüan-wu K'o-ch'in (1063–1135). A Chinese Ch'an monk known mainly as the editor of the Blue Cliff Records (Chin., Pi-yen lu; Jap., Hekigan-roku), a collection of kōans first compiled by Hsüeh-tou Ch'ung-hsien (980–1052). Hsüeh-tou had compiled the 100 cases comprising the work and added his own verse to them, while Yüan-wu added an introduction and commentaries to the case and Hsüeh-tou's verse to each case.
