Xinyang
Xinyang, Henan/China Pingyang, Sanzhou Known as Pingyang County, it was established as Xinyang County in 976. The Xin, or xìn, is thought to be related to the character shēn ‘read’ from the local place‐name Shen Zhou; both could have the same pronunciation and were interchangeable. Thus Xinyang might be a composite of Shen Zhou and Yiyang after the nearby Yiyang Mountains with yáng meaning a location south of Mt Dafu. During the Manchu dynasty (1644–1911) the city was known as Sanzhou, but it reverted to county status in 1913 and readopted its previous name. The city of Xinyang was re‐established in 1949.
