Woomera rocket range
Woomera rocket range A weapons-testing zone including areas of South and Western Australia, established in 1946. It includes the sites of Emu and Maralinga, which were used for British nuclear tests from 1953 until 1963, with a minimum of precautions. A Royal Commission found in 1985 that some sites were still contaminated, and that some Aborigines had been severely affected by radiation. In December 1994, the Australian government agreed to pay $A13.5 million in compensation.
