Wollongong

Wollongong , city (1991 pop. 211,417), New South Wales, SE Australia. It is an important iron and steel center. There are other industries, including copper refining and textile and chemical manufacturing. Port Kembla, which was absorbed by Wollongong in 1947, is a major port. The Univ. of Wollongong is there.

Wollongong

Wollongong City-port in New South Wales, Australia, 65km (40mi) s of Sydney. Settled in 1815, Wollongong became a major exporter of grain and coal, and a large iron and steel centre. Port Kembla has Australia's biggest steelworks. Other industries: chemicals, textiles, copper. Pop. (1996 est.) 262,600.
