Sargent, Winthrop
Sargent, Winthrop (1753–1820) Revolutionary War army officer and territorial governor, born in Massachusetts. Sargent served in Gen. Henry Knox's artillery unit during the Revolution, reaching the rank of major. In 1791 he was wounded in the major military defeat suffered by U.S. forces at the hands of a confederation of Native American tribes at Fort Recovery; as acting governor of the Ohio territory, in 1791 and 1792, he managed to repel later attacks by Indians against other forts. In 1798 he became the first governor of the newly organized territory of Mississippi. He was unpopular with settlers, who wanted more control over local affairs, and was replaced after Thomas Jefferson became president.
