Winchester College

Winchester College. In about 1330 William of Wykeham attended a grammar school in Winchester. He later incorporated it in a new establishment, St Mary College of Winchester, founded by charter on 20 October 1382. The school consisted of a warden, 10 fellows, 2 masters, 3 chaplains, 70 scholars, and 16 choristers. The scholars, selected on a nation-wide basis, were prepared for entry to New College, Oxford, which Wykeham had founded in 1369. Entrants to the college were trained for holy orders. Winchester became a public school and flourished under George Moberly, headmaster from 1835 to 1866.
