William Wrede

Wrede, William

Wrede, William (1859–1906), German NT scholar. He pioneered the ‘history of traditions’ approach to the Gospels in Das Messiasgeheimnis in den Evangelien (1901; Eng.tr., 1971). In this work, which gave its name to the whole discussion of the so-called Messianic Secret (q.v.), Wrede challenged the view that Mk. was an unadorned record of historical fact and maintained that Jesus did not claim to be the Messiah, the Gospel story being a reading back of later beliefs into the narrative. In his Paulus (1905; Eng.tr., 1907) he argued that St Paul had radically transformed Christ's teaching.

Wrede, William

Wrede, William (1859–1906) German NT scholar born in Hanover, professor at Breslau. His book on the Messianic Secret in the Gospels (1901) suggested that Jesus' instructions to keep quiet about his work (e.g. Mark 1: 44) were not spoken by him but were later apologetic devices of the Church to account for the failure of Jesus' contemporaries to acclaim him as Messiah. Wrede's theory was accepted in the next generation by the form critics, as a presupposition of their discipline, and also foreshadowed Redaction Criticism.
