William Smith Clark

William Smith Clark 1826-86, American educator, b. Ashfield, Mass., grad. Amherst, 1848, and studied chemistry and botany at Göttingen (Ph.D., 1852). He taught at Amherst until the Civil War, fought in many battles, and emerged from the struggle a brigadier general. He was elected to the Massachusetts General Court in 1864, 1865, and 1867 and while there secured the location at Amherst of the Massachusetts Agricultural College (the present-day Univ. of Massachusetts). He was president of this institution from 1867 to 1879, helped organize its work, and taught botany and horticulture. He went to Japan (1876-77) to establish the Imperial College of Agriculture at Sapporo.

Clarke, Kenneth Harry

Clarke, Kenneth Harry (1940– ) British statesman, chancellor of the exchequer (1993–97). Clarke became a Conservative MP in 1970, and joined Margaret Thatcher's cabinet in 1985. He was secretary of state for health (1988–90). When John Major became prime minister, Clarke was appointed home secretary (1992). As chancellor, his first budget saw an increase in taxation, but the 1996 budget reduced the basic rate by one penny. An outspoken Europhile, Clarke unsuccessfully challenged William Hague and Iain Duncan Smith for the leadership of the Conservative Party.

Clark, William

Clark, William (1770–1838), served in the U.S. army during campaigns against the Indians, and was commissioned by Jefferson to be co‐commander of the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803–6) (see Lewis, Meriwether). He later headed independent surveys, notably one of the Yellowstone River, and was governor of Missouri Territory (1813–21), serving the rest of his life as Superintendent of Indian Affairs. He was the brother of George Rogers Clark.
