William Rowley

Rowley, William

Rowley, William (c.1585–1626), English actor and dramatist, known to have collaborated with several contemporary playwrights, notably Middleton, with whom he wrote an outstanding play, The Changeling (1622). He also worked with Dekker and Ford on The Witch of Edmonton (1621), with Fletcher on A Maid in the Mill (1623), and with Webster on A New Wonder, a Woman Never Vexed (1624) and A Cure for a Cuckold (1625). He is known to have played Plumporridge, the fat clown, in The Inner Temple Masque in 1619, Jacques, a fat fool, in his own play All's Lost By Lust (c.1622), and the fat bishop in Middleton's A Game at Chess (1624).

Rowley, William

Rowley, William (?1585–1626), dramatist and actor. His most notable partnership was with Middleton with whom he wrote A Fair Quarrel (1615–16, printed 1617) and The Changeling (1622, printed 1653). He also assisted in The Witch of Edmonton (1621, printed 1658) with Dekker and Ford; and A Cure for a Cuckold (1624–5, printed 1661), with Webster. Rowley's tragedy All's Lost by Lust (c.1619, printed 1633) remained popular throughout the 17th cent.

William Rowley

William Rowley , 1585?–1642?, English playwright and actor. He collaborated with many noted dramatists, including Dekker, Ford, and Webster; his best work, notably The Changeling (1622), was written with Thomas Middleton . Of Rowley's own plays, All's Lost by Lust (1622) is considered to be his best.
