Johnson, Harold Keith
Johnson, Harold Keith (1912–83) U.S. Army general, born in Bowesmont, North Dakota. Johnson was chief of staff (1964–68) during a critical period in the Vietnam War. His belief in the need for the rapid deployment of a large force brought him into conflict with President Lyndon B. Johnson and other civilian leaders, who favored a more gradual buildup. He also opposed the strategy of Gen. William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. forces in Vietnam. Johnson retired at the expiration of his term as chief of staff. During World War II Johnson served as a battalion commander in the defense of the Bataan Peninsula and participated in the Bataan Death March (1942), following which he was imprisoned for the remainder of the war.
