William John Gies
William John Gies , 1872–1956, American biological chemist, b. Reisterstown, Md., grad. Gettysburg College (B.S. 1893; Ph.D. Yale, 1897). He began teaching at Columbia in 1898 and served as secretary of the faculty of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (1905–21). He was instrumental in establishing the School of Dentistry at Columbia, and his negotiations led to the formation of the American Association of Dental Schools. Gies wrote many textbooks, contributed articles to scientific journals, and edited the Journal of Dental Research. |

Williams, John
Williams, John (1582–1650), Abp. of York. Under James I he received many benefices, including the bishopric of Lincoln (1621), and was made Lord Keeper. He was disliked by Charles I and W. Laud, but in the Long Parliament he headed a party of compromise and, recovering royal favour, was translated to York in 1641. He was a royalist in the Civil War but allowed to retire to Wales.

Strutt, John William
Strutt, John William ( Lord Rayleigh) (1842–1919) A mathematician and physicist of Cambridge University, Rayleigh worked on optics, noble gases, wave mechanics, etc. In the field of Earth science, he studied radioactivity in rocks, and gave his name to a type of surface earthquake wave.
