William Davis Ticknor

William Davis Ticknor 1810-64, American publisher. John Reed and James T. Fields became Ticknor's partners in Boston, and their firm is best known as Ticknor and Fields. They published the works of many of the famous Americans of the day, including Longfellow, Lowell, and O. W. Holmes, and their offices were the meeting place of literary men. From 1854 to 1864 the firm published the Atlantic Monthly and the North American Review. Ticknor was the first American publisher to pay foreign authors for the rights to their works.

Ticknor, William Davis (1810–64), Boston publisher, in 1832 founded the firm known after 1854 as Ticknor and Fields, which published the works of his friends Longfellow, Holmes, Lowell, Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, and many of their distinguished contemporaries. The firm published the Atlantic Monthly (1859ff.) and The North American Review (1854–64), and owned the Old Corner Bookstore.
