Willem van Haren

Willem van Haren , 1710-68, Dutch poet, b. Friesland, of a noble family. His chief work is an epic poem, Friso (1741). His brother, Onno Zwier van Haren, 1713-79, also a poet, wrote patriotic verse, notably a series about the Gueux , entitled first Aan de Vaderland (1769), in final form De Geusen (1772).

Aelst, Willem van (b Delft, c.1625; d ?Amsterdam, c.1683). Dutch painter of lavish flower pieces and still-lifes. He was a pupil in Delft of his uncle Evert van Aelst (1602–57), by whom no works are known. From 1645 to 1649 Willem worked in France (1645–9) and from 1649 to 1656 in Florence, where he was court painter to Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. In 1657, following a brief stay in Delft, he settled in Amsterdam, where his pupils included Rachel Ruysch.
