Drost, Willem
Drost, Willem (active mid-17th century). Dutch painter, perhaps of German origin. According to Houbraken he was a pupil of Rembrandt and lived in Rome for several years, but otherwise almost nothing is recorded of his life, and only a small number of paintings (and a few drawings and etchings) are attributed to him (several of them are signed). All the works that are dated are from the period 1652–63, and it would seem that at this time Drost was one of Rembrandt's closest and most talented followers. It has even been proposed that Drost is the author of several paintings that have traditionally been regarded as Rembrandt's, most notably the celebrated and enigmatic Polish Rider (Frick Coll., New York), which figures in many books as one of the master's most poetic creations. Among Drost's undisputed works the masterpiece is the sensuous Bathsheba (1654, Louvre, Paris), painted in the same year as Rembrandt's famous depiction of the subject (likewise in the Louvre) and evidently inspired by it.

Drost, Willem
Drost, Willem (1633–59). Dutch painter, one of the most gifted of Rembrandt's pupils, but also one of the most enigmatic. Several paintings now given to him were formerly attributed to his master. Among his undisputed works the masterpiece is the sensuous Bathsheba (1654, Louvre, Paris), painted in the same year as Rembrandt's famous depiction of the subject (likewise in the Louvre) and evidently inspired by it.
