Wilhelm Keitel

Wilhelm Keitel , 1882-1946, German general. A supporter of Hitler, he became (1938) chief of staff of the supreme command of the armed forces, a new post that marked the German army's subjection to Hitler. On May 8, 1945, Keitel ratified in Berlin the unconditional surrender of Germany. He was convicted at the Nuremberg war-crimes trial and hanged.

Keitel, Wilhelm (b. 22 Sept. 1882, d. 16 Oct. 1946). Military adviser to Hitler In 1938–45 he was Chief of the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces, and he became infamous not only for his arrogance, but also for his complete subjection to Hitler's whims. In 1940, he led the German-French armistice negotiations, and on 8 May 1945 he signed the unconditional surrender of the German armed forces. He was sentenced to death at the Nuremberg Trials.
