Wilfrid Scawen Blunt

Blunt, Wilfrid Scawen

Blunt, Wilfrid Scawen (1840–1922), poet, diplomat, traveller, anti-imperialist, and Arabist. His first volume of poetry, Sonnets and Songs by Proteus (1875, subsequently revised), passionately addresses various women. It was followed by several other volumes of verse, which include love lyrics, evocations of the Sussex countryside, and adaptations from the Arabic. He also wrote and agitated in support of Egyptian, Indian, and Irish independence, thus earning the approval of G. B. Shaw; a brief spell in an Irish prison inspired his sonnet sequence In Vinculis (1889). My Diaries appeared in 2 vols, 1919–20.
