Whitby

Whitby

Whitby Coastal town in n Yorkshire, England. Saint Hilda founded an abbey here in 657, which was destroyed by the Danes in the 9th century. In c.663, the Synod of Whitby was held at the abbey. The subsequent break with the Celtic Church placed the English Church in line with mainstream European Christian theology.

Whitby town (1991 pop. 61,281), SE Ont., Canada, NE of Toronto, on Lake Ontario. It has a good harbor. The town's manufactures include tires and electronic equipment.
