Flanders (Flemish: Vlaanderen; French: Flandre), Belgium‐France‐The Netherlands A medieval region now divided between three countries. The Belgian region of Flanders has five provinces of which two are East and West Flanders. In France it is part of the Nord department and in the Netherlands of the province of Zeeland. The name probably means ‘Lowland’ or ‘Land subject to Flooding’. The Flemish name means much the same from vlakte ‘plain’ and wanderen ‘to wander’, thus a large flat area.
