Waterford (United States)

Waterford

Waterford, Canada, Ireland, USA 1. Ireland: a county borough and city‐port whose Gaelic name is Port Láirge ‘Bank on the Haunch’, a reference to the round shape of the bank of the River Suir. Waterford, originally Vadrefiord, is said to mean ‘Wether Inlet’ from the Old Scandinavian vethr ‘wether’ and fjọrthr ‘inlet’. Wethers, usually castrated rams, are supposed to have been exported from here, but this is difficult to prove. The city gives its name to Waterford glass.2. USA (Connecticut): founded c.1653, the name derives from the shallows which could be forded here. Other cities and towns with this name in the USA are generally named after the Irish city.
