Washington Color Painters

Washington Color Painters

Washington Color Painters. Name given to a group of American painters living in Washington, DC, who in the 1950s and 1960s were leading exponents of Colour Field Painting. The two most important figures were Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland; others were Gene Davis (1920–85), Thomas Downing (1928– ), Howard Mehring (1931– ), and Paul Reed (1919– ). The name comes from an exhibition entitled ‘The Washington Color Painters’ held at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in 1965. Sometimes they are known as the Washington Color Field painters.
