Friedlaender, Walter
Friedlaender, Walter (b Berlin, 10 Mar. 1873; d New York, 6 Sept. 1966). German-American art historian. He was originally a Sanskrit scholar and took up art history seriously when he was 30. In 1914 he became a professor at the university of Freiburg im Breisgau, where he numbered Erwin Panofsky among his pupils. He was dismissed by the Nazis in 1933 and two years later he emigrated to the USA to become a professor at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, where he exercised a great influence on American art historians. His major publications include Von David bis Delacroix (1930; translated as From David to Delacroix, 1952), Caravaggio Studies (1955), Mannerism and Anti-Mannerism in Italian Painting (1957), monographs on Poussin in German (1914) and English (1966), and (with Anthony Blunt) a complete catalogue of Poussin's drawings (5 vols., 1939–74).

Walter Friedlaender
Walter Friedlaender , 1873–1966, American art historian, b. Germany. Friedlaender pursued a distinguished academic career in Germany until 1934 and afterward taught at New York Univ. His best-known works on 16th- and 17th-century art include Caravaggio Studies (1955), his edition of The Drawings of Nicolas Poussin (3 vol., 1939–55), and Mannerism and Anti-Mannerism in Italian Painting (1957), all basic works in their fields. Friedlaender's David to Delacroix (tr. 1952) is a broad and important survey in the study of 19th-century art. His publications in German include studies on 16th-century architecture at the Vatican (1912) and on Claude Lorrain (1921). |

Friedlaender, Walter
Friedlaender, Walter (1873–1966). German-American art historian. He had a distinguished academic career in Germany and, as professor at the university of Freibourg, numbered Erwin Panofsky among his pupils. In 1933 he was dismissed by the Nazis and emigrated to the USA, where he became professor at New York University and exercised a great influence on American art historians. His major publications include Caravaggio Studies (1955), David to Delacroix (1952), Mannerism and Anti-Mannerism in Italian Painting (1957), and monographs on Poussin in German (1914) and English (1966).
