Walter Colton

Colton, Walter

Colton, Walter (1797–1851) clergyman, naval chaplain, journalist, and author, born in Rutland County, Vermont. Colton was appointed naval chaplain by President Andrew Jackson in 1831. He accompanied Robert F. Stockton to Monterey, California, in 1845, and was appointed alcalde (chief justice) of Monterey in 1846.

Colton founded the first newspaper in California, the Californian in 1846. Colton also ordered the people he convicted to build their own prison, which they did so well that he pardoned several of the ablest workers.

Walter Colton

Walter Colton , 1797–1851, American editor, writer, and clergyman, b. Rutland co., Vt. He became a naval chaplain in 1831. His books Ship and Shore (1835), A Visit to Constantinople and Athens (1836), and Deck and Port (1850) are based upon his naval experiences. In 1846 he was appointed chief judge of Monterey, Calif., and founded the Californian, California's first newspaper. Colton's book Three Years in California (1850) is an excellent historical account of this period.

Colton, Walter

Colton, Walter (1797–1851), author of Ship and Shore (1835), the account of his cruise as naval chaplain, and Deck and Port (1850), about his voyage to California (1845) with Commodore Stockton. He remained in California, became alcalde of Monterey, and founded The Californian, the territory's first newspaper. His Three Years in California (1850) is an important historical source.
