Waikato

Waikato , river, 264 mi (425 km) long, rising in Lake Taupo, central North Island, New Zealand, and flowing NW into the Tasman Sea. It is New Zealand's longest river. The Waikato power plants are the main source of hydroelectricity on the North Island. Coal is mined from fields including reclaimed swamplands. Dairy farming, lamb production, and grape and kiwi growing are important activities in the basin.

Waikato Longest river in New Zealand, in central and nw North Island. It rises from Lake Taupo in the central highlands, and flows nnw into the Tasman Sea. Hydroelectric schemes from eight dams along the river provide power for most of North Island. The river is navigable for 129km (80mi) of its 425km (264mi) course.

Waikato, North Island/New Zealand A regional council and a river meaning ‘Flowing Water’ from wai, although the Maori were impressed by the strength of its flow and it could be taken to mean ‘torrent’.
