Wagram or Deutsch-Wagram , town, Lower Austria prov., NE Austria, in the Marchfeld, near Vienna. On July 5-6, 1809, Napoleon I gained one of his most brilliant victories there. Despite their heroic conduct and the able leadership of Archduke Charles, the Austrians were forced to fall back by French field artillery fire. Napoleon's "grand battery" of 100 guns was the largest concentration of artillery that had until then been used for massed fire. More than 70,000 casualties resulted from the battle. Six days later, Austria was forced to conclude an armistice.

Wagram, Battle of (5–6 July 1809) A battle in the NAPOLEONIC WARS fought between the combined French and Italian forces led by NAPOLEON, and the Austrians under the Archduke Charles, at the village of Wagram, near Vienna. Napoleon, determined to offset earlier setbacks, ordered a massive attack on the well-chosen Austrian position. The French, who had been close to defeat, claimed the victory, but their losses outnumbered those of the Austrians. It was followed by the Treaty of Schönbrunn, in which Austria lost territory and agreed to join the CONTINENTAL SYSTEM against Britain.
