Waffen-SS

Waffen-SS ˈväfən the part of German SS armed, trained, organized, and employed during World War II as elite conventional ground forces. By the end of the war in May 1945 more than 800,000 men had served in the 38 division-size units of the Waffen-SS. Waffen-SS units, which included formations composed of foreign volunteers, participated in all the major campaigns fought by German forces in World War II and were often given priority for equipment and replacements and assigned the most difficult offensive or defensive missions.
