Tough growing conditions for Stokely; Del Monte leads canned vegetable industry Del Monte, a privately held company based in San Francisco, dominates the fragmented business with close to 30% of the market. Here's a look at the industry and its two biggest companies. Information was gleaned from the companies and industry sources. Stokely USA Inc. Headquarters: Oconomowoc Sales: $206 million Chief executives: Steve Theobald, president and chief executive officer; Kenneth Murray, senior vice president of sales and marketing; Russell Trunk, senior vice president of operations; Leslie Wilson, vice president and chief financial officer. Market share: 12% Employees: 475 Processing plants: 7 History: Stokely USA was founded as Oconomowoc Canning and Products Co. in 1920, the year Congress passed the Volstead Act banning the sale of alcoholic beverages. Peter Binzel, R.P. Binzel, Joseph Voreck and X.F. Weix, all brewers, were put out of business by Prohibition and decided to can peas. With backing from Ernest Theobald and Walter H. Theobald, they built a factory in downtown Oconomowoc. In 1924, the company copyrighted the name "Teenie Weenie" and put elves on the labels of its products. In 1940, Stokely added sweet corn to its line. Stokely entered the frozen-food business in the late 1980s in a failed attempt to capitalize in that market segment. It has since left that business. LARGEST COMPANIES Del Monte Corp. Headquarters: San Francisco Sales: $1.07 billion Net income: Del Monte would not disclose income figures. Market share: Estimated at 28% Employees: 12,000 (during harvest season) Number of plants: 13 Green Giant, a division of The Pillsbury Co. Headquarters: Minneapolis Sales: $900 million Net income: NA Market share: 14% Employees: NA Number of plants: 3 INDUSTRY Estimated annual sales: $2.8 billion Expected growth: "Canned vegetable consumption in the U.S. is basically flat and has been for quite sometime. I really don't anticipate any changes within the near future," said Paul Julius, executive director of the Midwest Food Processors Association in Madison. The organization represents 23 canned food processors in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. Estimated canned food sales from processors in the three states is more than $1.5 billion.

; Stokely USA is hoping more people take their mom's advice: Eat your veggies. But there is little reason to believe they will do so, and that may be the biggest challenge facing the Oconomowoc company as it fights to remain competitive after years of red ink. Consumption of canned vegetables has
