Borisov-Musatov, Victor
Borisov-Musatov, Victor (1870–1905). Russian painter and graphic artist. He studied in Paris, 1895–8, and acquired a taste for Impressionism and Symbolism, the latter appealing to the dreamy temperament that had been noted in him since his boyhood (which was marred by ill health). He painted landscapes and portraits, but he is best known for figure compositions featuring languid young women in 18th-century costume—often these were decorative panels intended for specific interiors. His work has an exquisite feeling for colour and pattern, and Alan Bird (A History of Russian Painting, 1987) has written that ‘he brought into Russian painting an elegant and restrained beauty tinged with mystical nuances which it was never to experience again'. Although he worked mainly in provincial Saratov (his birthplace), he was well known by the time of his early death—not only in Russia, but also in France and Germany (his work was successfully exhibited in these countries in 1904–5). He was particularly influential on the Blue Rose group.
