López y Portaña, Vicente (b Valencia, 19 Sept. 1772; d Madrid, 22 Apr. 1850). Spanish painter. He painted many different subjects but was primarily a portraitist, continuing the tradition of Mengs into the 19th century; his sitters included some of the leading Spanish personalities of his period. In 1814 he was appointed principal court painter to Ferdinand VII (jointly with the elderly Goya), in 1817 director of the Academy of S. Fernando, and in 1823 curator of the Prado.

López y Portaña, Vicente (1772–1850). Spanish painter. He painted many different subjects but was primarily a portraitist, continuing the tradition of Mengs into the 19th century; his sitters included many of the leading Spanish personalities of his period.
