Maçip, Vicente
Maçip, Vicente (or Vicente Masip) (b ?Andilla, c.1475; d Valencia, 1550). Spanish painter, one of a dynasty of artists working in Valencia. Little is known of his life, but his major work, the main altarpiece of Segorbe Cathedral (1528–30), shows him to have been a leading representative of the Italianate style. During his later years he collaborated with the outstanding member of the family, his son and follower Juan (known as Juan de Juanes, b Valencia, c.1510; d Bocairente, Valencia province, 21 Dec. 1579). Juan's work combines figures in the Italian Mannerist style with a polished Netherlandish technique. He was the leading painter of his time in Valencia and had many followers.
