Vernon Watkins

Watkins, Vernon Phillips

Watkins, Vernon Phillips (1906–67), poet, lived most of his life in and near Swansea and was for many years a friend of Dylan Thomas. His first volume demonstrated his range; the title poem of Ballad of the Mari Lwyd (1941) is a long, rhetorical piece rooted in Welsh folklore and mythology, whereas ‘The Collier’ and other poems are marked by simplicity and a restrained compassion. Watkins's lyric gift was developed in many subsequent volumes, including The Lamp and the Veil (1945), Cypress and Acacia (1959), and Fidelities (1968). His Selected Poems 1930–60 appeared in 1967. He translated, and was influenced by, German and French poetry.
