Cheney, Richard B.

A Dictionary of Contemporary World History | 2004 | | © A Dictionary of Contemporary World History 2004, originally published by Oxford University Press 2004. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Cheney, Richard B. ( ‘Dick’ Cheney) (b. 30 Jan. 1941), US Vice President, 2001–  Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, he was raised in Wyoming and graduated from the University of Wyoming. He joined the Nixon administration in 1969, and under Gerald Ford served as Chief of Staff, 1975–6. From 1977–89, he was Representative for Wyoming in Congress, and from 1989 to 1993 he served under George Bush as Secretary of Defense. In 2000, he was asked by George W. Bush to direct the search for a running mate, and on the strong recommendation of his father he ended up with the job himself. He became by far the most active and influential Vice-President in US history, overseeing day-to-day policy as well as the administration's political appointments. Cheney had made a fortune from the oil business and continued to enjoy strong links with business. This came to haunt him after the collapse of Enron, a giant energy supplier, which raised suspicions that he had framed the administration's energy policy under undue influence from affected companies.
