University of Washington
University of Washington at Seattle; state supported; coeducational; chartered and opened 1861 as the Territorial Univ. of Washington, renamed 1889. There are noted schools of medicine and engineering, and the university operates laboratories for the marine sciences. Also of note is the Washington State Museum, which is located on campus and houses collections in natural history and anthropology. University publications include American Journal of Human Genetics, Journal of Limnology and Oceanography, and Pacific Northwest Quarterly. |

National Defense University
National Defense University a postgraduate joint service school at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C. Established in 1976 as a parent of the National War College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, it traces its history back to 1903, when the U.S. Army War College was founded at Fort McNair. In 1981 the Armed Forces Staff College joined the university.
