University of Toledo at Toledo, Ohio; coeducational; chartered 1872, opened 1875, and received its first municipal support in 1884. Its present name was adopted in 1940, and in 1967 the university was transferred to the state. In 2007 it added the Health Science Campus (formerly the Medical Univ. of Ohio). Research facilities include a polymer institute, an industrial systems center, and a center for the visual arts. The library has a special collection of Ezra Pound materials.

Hardy, Hugh Gelston

Hardy, Hugh Gelston (1932– ). American architect, he formed Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associated (HHPA) with Malcolm Holzman (1940– ) and Norman Henry Pfeiffer (1940– ) in NYC (1967). The firm's work includes the Olmsted Theater, Adelphi University, Garden City, NY (1974), the addition to the University of Toledo Performing Arts Center, Toledo, OH (1967), the Columbus Occupational Health Center, Columbus, IN (1973), the renovation of the Art Museum, St Louis, MO (1977), the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1987–91), the Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Eugene, OR (1978–82), and the Boettcher Concert Hall, Denver, CO (1978–9). HHPA also became known for its use of familiar roadside structures, signs, and collages. The bunker-like WCCO-TV building, Minneapolis, MN (1983), is an example of their work.
