Senior, Olive

Senior, Olive (1941– ), poet and short story writer, born and raised in Jamaica and educated at Carleton University, Ottawa; she divides her time between Jamaica and Canada. Her collections of poetry, Talking of Trees (1985) and Gardening in the Tropics (1994), employ a wide range of voices, from the colloquial and the conversational to the prophetic, to explore the struggles and history of her land and its people. Her volumes of short stories include Summer Lightning (1986), Arrival of the Snake Woman (1989), and Discerner of Hearts (1995).

Algonquin Radio Observatory

Algonquin Radio Observatory A radio observatory in Algonquin Park near Lake Traverse, Ontario, site of a 45.7-m antenna opened in 1966. It was operated by the National Research Council of Canada until 1991. The site is now operated jointly by the Geodetic Survey Division of Natural Resources Canada, Ottawa, and the Space Geodynamics Laboratory of the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Technology at York University, Toronto. It is now used primarily for geodetic and astrometric Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI).
