University of Minnesota main campus at Minneapolis-St. Paul; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1851 and 1868, opened as a university 1869. Other campuses are at Duluth (1947), Morris (1959), and Crookston (1965). The university is affiliated with the Mayo Foundation for medical research and education at Rochester and with the Institute of Technology, the Heart Hospital (heart treatment and research), and the Mayo Memorial Medical Center (see Mayo , Charles H.), at Minneapolis. The university's library houses extensive research materials in American and European history, and the Museum of Natural History has a noted collection of animal life displays. The Duluth campus also has a medical school as well as research centers in chemical toxicology, natural resources, and neurocommunications.

Gopher A precursor to the WORLD WIDE WEB developed by the University of Minnesota in order to make distributed information easy to access. Gopher sites are rapidly decreasing in number although there are still quite a few that exist because the effort of converting them to WEB SITES is too large. Gopher sites can be accessed via GOPHER LINKS embedded into WEB PAGES as ANCHORS.
