University of Denver at Denver; coeducational; United Methodist; chartered 1864 and opened as Colorado Seminary by John Evans and others. In 1880 it was reorganized as the Univ. of Denver. It maintains Chamberlin Observatory and, in cooperation with other institutions, high-altitude laboratories at Echo Lake and at Mt. Evans. There are centers for international education, Judaic studies, and Latin American studies.

Havighurst, Walter [Edwin] (1901–94), Wisconsin‐born professor at Miami University, Ohio, graduated from the University of Denver. His works include Upper Mississippi: A Wilderness Saga (1937, revised 1944); Long Ships Passing (1942), about Great Lakes shipping; Voices on the River (1964), a history of the Mississippi; Alexander Spotswood (1967), biography of a colonial Virginia governor; River to the West (1970), on the Ohio River; and Ohio (1977), on the state. His novels include Pier 17 (1935), about a West Coast dock strike; The Quiet Shore (1937), set near Lake Erie; The Winds of Spring (1940), about pioneer Wisconsin; No Homeward Course (1941), about a German sea raider; and The Signature of Time (1949), about generations of a Lake Erie family.

Chapman, John (Arthur)

Chapman, John [Arthur] (1900–72), critic. Born in Denver, the son of journalists, he studied at the University of Colorado and at Columbia. Chapman began his newspaper career in 1917 on the Denver Times and joined the New York Daily News in 1920, becoming its drama editor in 1929 and its drama critic in 1943, a post he held until his retirement. He also served as Burns Mantle's assistant on the Best Plays and after Mantle's death edited the series from 1947 to 1952. Thereafter for many years he edited a less‐successful series.
