University System of Maryland
University System of Maryland state-supported system of higher education in Maryland, est. 1988 as the University of Maryland System, renamed 1997. It includes all but two of the publicly supported colleges and universities in the state: Bowie State Univ; Coppin State College; Frostburg State Univ.; Salisbury Univ.; Towson Univ.; the Univ. of Baltimore; the Univ. of Maryland; the Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore; the Univ. of Maryland, Baltimore County; the Univ. of Maryland Eastern Shore; and the Univ. of Maryland University College.

Cambridge, University of
Cambridge, University of Founded in 1209 (with claims for an earlier origin), it is one of the oldest academic institutions in England. It has a collegiate system, the oldest college being Peterhouse (1284). A centre of Renaissance learning and theological debate in the Reformation, it now has faculties for studying almost every discipline. In the 20th century it excelled in scientific research. Its many buildings of historic and architectural interest include Kings College Chapel.

logical universals A term sometimes applied in the secondary literature to the major analytical concepts in the writings of Talcott Parsons: that is, the pattern variables, systems problems, and evolutionary universals (all of which are discussed separately in this dictionary).
