House Armed Services Committee

House Armed Services Committee a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives organized under the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1946, uniting the House Military Affairs Committee and the Naval Affairs Committee. The House Armed Services Committee is responsible for the common defense generally, for any activity undertaken by the Department of Defense or by departments of the Army, Navy, or Air Force, and for the Selective Service system. Committee membership, averaging between thirty-three and fifty-four members, reflects party membership in the House as a whole. Subcommittees deal with hearings, investigations, and drafting legislation concerning military installations, personnel, procurement, readiness, research and development, sea power, and strategic materials.
